Psalms for Troubled Times – Psalm 70

Let God be magnified in my body

‘Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to my help, O LORD …
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually,

Let God be magnified”.

But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.

This Psalm reminds us that we ought not pray for the Lord’s help for our own ends, but we should see our need as an opportunity for the name of our Lord God to be magnified to to those around us, as they see evidence that the God we trust, makes haste to help.

Paul takes this thought up in Philippians 1:19-21

‘For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer … that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
