In our devotion yesterday, we considered how Paul was content in his circumstances because he was resting in Christ’s strength. In todays Scripture (have a read of Philippians 4 v 15-23) he adds a second reason for his contentment: he is trusting in, and has experienced God’s supply.
That supply had come, and continued to come through the believer’s in Philippi themselves, ‘from the first day until now’ (1v5). Paul was most appreciative of their encouragement. Though he had already thanked them in chapter one, he wants to revisit their kindness before the end of this letter, and remind them that their sacrificial gift was ‘a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God‘ (4v18).
There’s a lesson to be learnt here. How is our giving? Do we look for the need among God’s people and God’s servants? And having seen a need, are we generous in our giving towards meeting that need? Paul would encourage us to have generous hearts, for he has learnt from experience that’s the kind of heart his God has. So he says:
“But my God shall supply all your need, according to His riches in glory, by Christ Jesus.”
Phil 4v19
That which is given to our God will never result in lack on our part.
We saw on Wednesday past how our Lord Jesus was able to take just 5 loaves and 2 small fish and bountifully fill a multitude. This bounty flowed from ‘His riches in glory’. 3000 years ago, Solomon came to the same conclusion, encouraging us to “honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine” (Proverbs 3:9,10).
Take time to praise God for His eternally bountiful supply.
